Insiders say Meta is targeting an August release for Llama 5, with a new mixture-of-experts architecture and 400B-active-parameter frontier variant.
Meta's Llama 5 is reportedly weeks away from release, with sources describing an August 2026 launch window and an architectural shift to a large mixture-of-experts model with roughly 400 billion active parameters at inference time.
Llama 5 would arrive as Chinese open-weight competitors (Moonshot's Kimi 3, DeepSeek's R2) are closing the capability gap with closed frontier models. Meta needs Llama 5 to defend the "open-weight frontier" position it staked out with Llama 3 and 4.
Mixture-of-experts architectures let a model be very large in total parameters while activating a subset per token. That means better peak capability at similar inference cost — the sweet spot for open-weight distribution where users care about local deployment.
Weights, license terms, and whether Meta includes the full frontier variant in the open release or holds it back for a hosted API. History suggests Meta will open everything eventually.
