Nine-figure seeds are the new normal in AI. Gradium's is unusual for being a European deal with Nvidia strategic participation.
Gradium, a Paris-based voice AI startup, closed a $100 million seed round — one of the largest early-stage checks in European AI to date. Nvidia participated as a strategic backer, and the company plans to open a San Francisco Bay Area office to compete for talent.
Details remain thin, but the company is understood to be targeting the enterprise voice-agent category — competing with players like Sesame, Retell, and Vapi. The pitch differentiator is model-plus-runtime as a single integrated product, rather than a wrapper around a general-purpose speech API.
Voice-specific foundation models require training runs measured in millions of dollars each. To ship a product, Gradium needs to fund the model, the runtime, the app layer, AND compete for salaries against Bay Area incumbents. $100M is not lavish at that scale — it's the floor.
Paris continues to punch above its weight in AI (Mistral, H, ElevenLabs). Gradium's raise adds to the pattern of frontier AI capital increasingly flowing outside the US.
